In January 2013 Melissa started to get interested in weight training when she started lifting at The Forge Gym. She had one simple goal: to perform a chin up. From that point Melissa became hooked! Since then she has become serious about powerlifting and just last year competed in her first Scottish Powerlifting competition and walked away with a Scottish Record for deadlift in her age and weight class! Less than 4 months later she again walked away from the powerlifting platform with two Scottish records and qualified to compete in the British Masters in Lincolnshire in February of this year where she again broke her own records. Melissa recently set a new Scottish Deadlift record in April 2015 with an impressive 130kg deadlift.
A former distance runner and cyclist, Melissa enjoyed taking part in races all over the highlands before switching to lifting and weight training. She is now longer a lover of 'constant cardio' and her mission is to encourage other women to get involved in lifting through her job as a Personal Trainer.
Melissa competed in Highlands Strongest Woman in 2014 and also at the Inverness Highland Games; two appearances which she says were the highlight of her year.
My journey in this sport is only just beginning and despite a few injuries I am looking forward to getting my numbers up particularly on the bench and squat. I have met so many amazing and inspirational men and women and am looking forward to competing at the SPL competition at my home gym (Forge Gym) in Inverness in the summer - I'm hoping to smash my records again!
